The place where she meditated was called “Thirumanancheri” after the marriage took place. “Thirumanan” means “marriage” in Tamil, while “Cheri” means ‘village’. Sri Thatheeswarar Temple, Chithukadu

Sri Thatheeswarar Temple is in Chithukadu near Chennai. The main deities here are Shiva and Goddess Poonguzhali. This temple is associated with Swathi Nakshatra. According to the Sthala Purana, two Siddhas called Padukkai Jadamudi Siddhar and Prana Deepika Siddhar performed deep penance here. They installed a Shiva Linga beneath a g ooseberry tree and named it Nelliappar (‘Nelli’ in Tamil means ‘gooseberry’). In Sanskrit, Gooseberry is Thathiri. Hence, Shiva got the name Sri Thatheeswarar. As the Siddhas performed penance here and the place had abundant vegetation, the town was called Siddarkadu. In later years, it became Chithukadu. This temple is famous for removing obstacles to marriage. Legend says that a King who was trying to renovate this temple found an idol of a Goddess. He gave her the name of Poonguzhali and built a shrine for her. Devotees believe that doing special Abishekam and Pooja for Shiva and the Goddess will remove delays in the marriage. This ancient Hindu temple is one of the 275 Paadal Petra Sivasthalangal. Shiva here graces devotees as Gneelivaneswarar. It is popularly called  ‘South Kailash‘ and ‘Melai Chidambaram.‘ Lord Yama was reborn here after Shiva vanquished him to save Sage Markandeya.
